Hassett Fed chair odds fall, Warsh chances surge on Kalshi after Trump comments

President Donald Trump’s recent comments regarding Kevin Warsh potentially becoming the next chair of the Federal Reserve have caused a significant stir in prediction markets. Warsh’s odds on Kalshi surged to 40% from 15% after Trump indicated that he is a top contender for the position. This sudden shift in probabilities also led to a decrease in the implied likelihood of National Economic Council Director Kevin Hassett securing the role, dropping below 60% from 80%.

In response to questions about Warsh being his leading choice, Trump affirmed, “Yes, I think he is,” signaling a potential change in the leadership at the Federal Reserve. Despite this, Trump made it clear that Hassett remains a strong contender, with the NEC director still maintaining a leading position on Kalshi.

The prediction markets had previously favored Hassett for the role, but Trump’s latest statements have altered investors’ assessments. The market dynamics swiftly adjusted to incorporate Trump’s endorsement of Warsh as a potential candidate for the position.

In addition to Warsh and Hassett, other candidates such as Governors Christopher Waller and Michelle Bowman, as well as Rick Rieder from BlackRock, were also considered for the position. However, Kalshi’s data now suggests that their chances of securing the role have diminished significantly.

Trump’s remarks also reiterated his belief that the Fed chair should consult with the president on rate policy. This stance reflects his ongoing disagreement with the current chair, Jerome Powell, particularly regarding interest rate decisions. Despite the Fed’s recent rate cuts, Trump has continued to advocate for further reductions to stimulate economic growth.

The evolving landscape of the Federal Reserve chair selection process underscores the importance of predicting market dynamics and political developments. As the race for the position intensifies, investors and analysts will closely monitor any new developments that may impact the future direction of the Federal Reserve.
