He has to show proof of life

College football insider Paul Finebaum has his eye on Mark Stoops and the Kentucky Wildcats in 2025. Stoops, who has been at the helm of the Wildcats since 2013, faced high expectations in 2024 but fell short with a disappointing 4-8 record, placing the team among the bottom in the SEC.

As the 2025 season approaches, Finebaum stresses the importance of a strong showing from Stoops and Kentucky. He believes that the pressure is on for them to bounce back and perform at a much higher level this year.

“I think there’s a way,” Finebaum expressed via Athlon Sports. “I mean, getting to a bowl, especially with a schedule like Kentucky’s, is not impossible. If you win the four nonconference games, now that includes beating Louisville, but that should not be impossible to do. You have four wins and all you need is two more… I think a bowl game is possible. I think Stoops just has to show proof of life.”

Prior to the 2024 season, Stoops had led the Wildcats to three consecutive winning seasons, but that streak came to an end last year. Now, Kentucky is determined to turn things around, aiming to not only reach a bowl game but also potentially contend for a playoff spot.

Kentucky’s 2025 campaign kicks off on August 30th against Toledo, setting the stage for what promises to be a pivotal season for the Wildcats.

Despite the challenges of the previous season, Stoops remains optimistic about the team’s prospects in 2025. He described the spring camp as enjoyable and emphasized the positive atmosphere within the team.

“We brought in very good players, very experienced guys that are mature and fit our culture,” Stoops remarked to On3. “I feel like we have a much more solid roster. I like this team, I like coaching them. I’m having fun. Just hitting that reset button as far as what we expect of this program and what the coaches have to demand and the players have to do. Just going through that process has just been fun, it’s been a great challenge.”

While there are some uncertainties surrounding the roster, quarterback Zach Calzada is expected to lead the charge for the Wildcats. Calzada, a transfer from Incarnate Word, put up impressive numbers last season, throwing for 3,744 yards, 35 touchdowns, and 9 interceptions.

Kentucky faces tough matchups against the likes of Ole Miss, South Carolina, Georgia, Texas, Tennessee, and Florida, highlighting the competitive nature of their schedule.

As the Wildcats gear up for the upcoming season, all eyes will be on Stoops and his team as they strive to make a statement and reclaim their position among the top contenders in college football.
