Hero dad makes dramatic citizen’s arrest, tackling armed would-be burglar

A heroic act was caught on CCTV as a father intervened in a daylight robbery attempt at a jewelry store, tackling a would-be thief armed with a hammer and performing a citizen’s arrest. Anthony Haby, 31, and his partner Jane Fleming were shopping at Bendigo Marketplace when they heard screams and sounds resembling gunshots coming from Stearns Showcase Jewelers. Without hesitation, Haby rushed into the store and confronted the suspect, who was smashing glass display cases with a hammer.
In a bold move, Haby tackled the suspect to the ground and held him there until police and security arrived. While he apprehended the thief, his partner assisted store staff in exiting the premises safely. The quick thinking and bravery displayed by Haby earned him praise from witnesses and staff members, with one describing him as an “Aussie hero.”
Haby, however, humbly downplayed his actions, stating that he simply did what he felt needed to be done in the situation. Despite his modesty, store manager Cheryl Luvara nominated him for a bravery award, acknowledging his selfless act of courage. The alleged offender appeared in court and was remanded in custody until August.
Following the incident, the business updated customers on the situation via a Facebook post, reassuring them that staff members and customers were safe and receiving the necessary support. They also expressed gratitude towards Haby for his bravery and quick response, as well as the management team and staff at Bendigo Marketplace for their swift action.
The community’s appreciation for Haby’s heroic deed serves as a reminder of the courage and selflessness that can emerge in challenging moments. His actions not only thwarted a potential crime but also showcased the power of ordinary individuals to make a difference in extraordinary circumstances.
