Hit-and-run driver was going 83 mph with alcohol level nearly 3x the legal limit: prosecutors

A horrific hit-and-run incident in Chicago has left a 37-year-old woman with severe injuries, allegedly caused by a driver with a dangerously high blood alcohol level. Prosecutors claim that Rasean Cummins, 28, was speeding at 83 mph on Division Street in a blue Tesla Model 3 when he ran a red light and collided with the victim’s car on December 9, 2023.
According to court records, Cummins had a blood alcohol level of .227, nearly three times the legal limit of .08. The impact of the crash resulted in the woman sustaining a fractured pelvis, liver damage, and the loss of four fingers from her right hand. Shockingly, Cummins also reportedly hit a police car after the crash and fled the scene when officers attempted to investigate.
Notably, Cummins was out on bail for a separate gun-related case at the time of the incident. Although he was acquitted in that matter earlier this year, the recent charges against him include aggravated DUI causing bodily harm, aggravated reckless driving causing bodily harm, and misdemeanor leaving the scene.
During a court hearing, Judge Susana Ortiz ordered Cummins to be detained pending trial due to the severity of the allegations against him. The prosecution’s case is backed by evidence showing Cummins’ reckless behavior leading up to the collision, including his high speed and disregard for traffic signals.
This tragic event serves as a stark reminder of the dangers of drunk driving and the devastating consequences it can have on innocent victims. The victim’s life has been forever altered due to Cummins’ alleged actions, highlighting the importance of holding individuals accountable for their reckless behavior on the road.
As this story unfolds, it underscores the critical need for stricter enforcement of DUI laws and increased awareness of the risks associated with impaired driving. Our thoughts are with the victim as she continues to recover from the physical and emotional trauma caused by this senseless act of negligence.
