Home Depot warns it may raise prices because of Trump’s tariffs

Home Depot has issued a warning that it may need to increase prices on certain products to counterbalance the impact of tariffs imposed by the Trump administration on imports. This marks a shift from the retailer’s previous position against making pricing adjustments due to trade-related issues.

During an earnings call on Tuesday, Home Depot, the largest home improvement chain in the nation, stated that the price changes would be targeted at specific product categories. The company’s executives described these adjustments as strategic rather than widespread.

Richard McPhail, Home Depot’s CFO, informed the Wall Street Journal that certain items would experience price changes in response to import duties. This signals a change in the company’s approach to managing the pressures of tariffs.

The anticipated price increases coincide with a slowdown in home renovation projects, as economic challenges and higher interest rates have led many homeowners to postpone major remodeling endeavors. Instead, they are opting for smaller improvements that do not require financing.

While approximately half of Home Depot’s merchandise is sourced from domestic suppliers, shielding them from international trade tariffs, imported goods remain susceptible to cost hikes. The company’s recent financial performance reflects a mixed pattern of consumer behavior, with a slight increase in comparable store sales but a decrease in customer visits.

Home Depot’s CEO, Ted Decker, expressed optimism that relief in mortgage rates could stimulate renewed customer activity. Despite challenges in the residential real estate market, the company remains focused on serving both DIY customers and professional contractors.

To address the softening demand in DIY projects, Home Depot has intensified efforts to attract professional contractors through expanded purchasing options and enhanced support services. The recent acquisition of building materials supplier GMS underscores the company’s commitment to catering to commercial customers.

Overall, Home Depot aims to maintain a leadership position in the home improvement sector by managing costs while providing value to customers. The company remains confident in its guidance and continues to focus on delivering a comprehensive range of products and services to meet customer needs.
