Homeless man arrested in Santa Monica shooting spree
The recent shooting spree in Santa Monica has left residents in Los Angeles on edge, as violence from transients has been on the rise in the city. David John Hairston II, a homeless man, has been charged with three counts of attempted murder after allegedly ambushing and shooting a police officer at a pedestrian mall. Just days prior, Hairston is also accused of shooting two teenagers who were riding a self-driving taxi. The 31-year-old faces various weapons charges in addition to the attempted murders, with a maximum sentence of 104 years to life in prison.
Hairston was apprehended after a citywide manhunt, but his case is just one example of the alarming acts of violence by transients in Los Angeles. In another incident, a transient man attacked a gardener working outside a gated home in Brentwood, knocking him in the head with a pole. This random act of violence was captured on Ring camera footage.
Meanwhile, residents in the Beverly Grove neighborhood have been dealing with an abandoned apartment complex that has been taken over by around 20 vagrants. The squatters have been causing disturbances, including starting fires in the building. Despite complaints to officials, residents feel like their concerns have been ignored.
Governor Gavin Newsom has called on cities to ban homeless encampments on public property, including sidewalks and parks. The rise in violence and disturbances from transients in Los Angeles has sparked a debate on how to address the issue of homelessness in the city. Residents are calling for action to ensure their safety and well-being in their communities.
