Horror Pic ‘Torment’ Sells to South Korea, Germany, U.K., Austria

FilmSharks, a prominent film distribution company based in Buenos Aires, has recently secured the theatrical and remake rights to the gripping horror thriller “Tormento” (“Torment”), directed by Olallo Rubio, known for his work on “Gimme the Power.”

The distribution rights have been acquired by South Korea’s Entermode for theatrical release, while Capelight has taken hold of all rights for Germany, Austria, Switzerland, and the U.K.

“Tormento” has garnered success in Mexico, prompting international deals to come together prior to its market premiere in Berlin. Guido Rud, the head of FilmSharks, expressed his excitement about the film’s powerful storyline and the opportunities it presents for global audiences. The film is actually an adaptation of “Morgue” by Hugo Cardozo, who claimed that the story was inspired by real events.

Rud also revealed that discussions are underway for a U.S. remake of the film, as well as potential Asian versions, with Vietnam’s Blue Lantern already securing the remake rights.

The film stars Natalia Solián, known for her role in the acclaimed “Huesera: The Bone Woman,” as an insomniac security guard who finds herself trapped inside a morgue. Haunted by guilt from a hit-and-run incident, she must confront both personal demons and supernatural forces within the eerie setting. The cast also includes Hoze Meléndez, Fernando Banda, and Dolores Espinoza.

“Tormento” is filled with suspenseful moments and jump scares, offering a thrilling experience for horror fans. FilmSharks acquired the worldwide sales rights for the film, which was released in Mexico by TelevisaUnivision distributor Videocine.

The production of “Tormento” is a collaboration between Videocine and BH5 Studios, the same team behind Guillermo Amoedo’s “The Inhabitant.” The film has performed well at the Mexican box office, attracting over 246,000 admissions and earning nearly $1 million.

In a positive trend for Mexican cinema, the national film industry has seen a rise in box office earnings and admissions for local films. Mexican productions have been gaining popularity, with a significant increase in market share and audience engagement. Films like “Mesa de Regalos” have led the way in showcasing the talent and creativity of Mexican filmmakers.
