Hotel operator Sonder ceasing operations after being dumped by Marriott
Sonder Hotel Operator Ceases Operations in Denver
Sonder, known for its apartment-style hotels in Denver, is shutting down its operations. In an email sent to local staff on Sunday, the San Francisco-based company announced that it would be ending its US operations immediately, with non-US operations to follow suit soon.
The email instructed guests to vacate Sonder properties by 9 a.m. local time on Monday, citing the decision as a last resort after exploring all possible options to continue operations.
Although Sonder did not provide a reason for the closure, hotel giant Marriott terminated its licensing agreement with Sonder earlier on Sunday. Marriott cited a default by Sonder as the reason for the termination.
Founded in Canada in 2014, Sonder operated in over 40 cities and went public in January 2022 through a SPAC deal. However, shares plummeted by 99% before the recent Marriott announcement.
In Denver, Sonder began operating in 2019 and had multiple locations in neighborhoods like LoHi. The company offered apartment amenities in their hotel rooms, including kitchens and washers and dryers, but lacked on-site staff.
Aside from hotel rooms, Sonder also leased office space in Thornton in 2018 for a customer service hub.
