House Democrats call on Rubio to allow injured children from Gaza into US following visa halt
House Democrats are advocating for the Trump administration to reconsider its decision to halt the approval of visitor visas for individuals from the Gaza Strip, particularly children in need of emergency medical care. The lawmakers, in a letter dated Aug. 25 addressed to Secretary of State Marco Rubio, emphasized the importance of allowing these children access to lifesaving treatment in the US.
The letter, signed by more than 140 lawmakers, highlighted the humanitarian crisis unfolding in Gaza amid the Israel-Hamas conflict. It criticized the recent move to pause visa approvals, noting that Palestinians seeking medical treatment outside Gaza already undergo rigorous vetting by the Israeli government, including security clearances and identity verification.
The State Department’s abrupt announcement earlier this month to stop issuing travel visas to individuals from Gaza, including medical-humanitarian visas, sparked backlash from lawmakers and advocacy groups. The agency cited the need to review the process for issuing these visas, raising concerns about potential links to terrorist organizations like Hamas.
Rubio defended the decision, pointing to allegations of ties between visa-acquiring organizations and terrorist groups. However, prior to the announcement, several children from Gaza had already arrived in the US for medical treatment without incident, as noted in the lawmakers’ letter.
The Democrats urged Rubio to reverse the State Department’s decision and resume issuing visas to individuals from Gaza with approved medical-humanitarian visas. They called for transparency regarding the national security concerns that prompted the change, as well as a clear timeline for the review process and safeguards to prevent disruptions in emergency medical care programs.
Furthermore, the lawmakers requested that children from Gaza requiring urgent medical attention be exempt from the visa pause. They emphasized the need for clarity on the policy’s rationale and its impact on vulnerable individuals and families in dire need of medical assistance.
In light of the ongoing crisis in Gaza, the House Democrats are pushing for a compassionate and efficient response from the Trump administration to ensure that children in need of medical care receive the necessary treatment without further delays or obstacles.
