House Republicans tee up vote on Trump-backed budget blueprint despite hard-liner opposition

House Republicans are gearing up for a crucial vote on the Senate-approved GOP budget blueprint, scheduled for Wednesday. Despite facing opposition from some rank-and-file lawmakers within their own party, Speaker Mike Johnson, R-La., along with President Donald Trump, is working diligently to rally support and secure the necessary votes to advance the legislation.
The GOP leaders are currently facing a challenge as they are short of the required number of votes to pass the bill. With the speaker only able to afford three defections if all members are present, several members of the House Freedom Caucus are expressing concerns about the plan’s impact on reducing the deficit.
However, Johnson remains optimistic about the outcome and believes that Republicans will ultimately come together to support the GOP budget blueprint. He expressed confidence in the passage of the bill, stating, “I think it’s going to pass today.”
President Trump has also thrown his weight behind the legislation, emphasizing the importance of passing the “one, big, beautiful bill” to boost the economy and address pressing issues.
In a recent social media post on his platform Truth Social, Trump underscored the significance of the bill, stating, “it is more important now, than ever, that we pass THE ONE, BIG, BEAUTIFUL BILL. The USA will Soar like never before!!!”
The House narrowly passed a procedural “rule” on Wednesday afternoon, paving the way for the budget blueprint to be considered. However, three Republicans, including Reps. Thomas Massie, R-Ky., Victoria Spartz, R-Ind., and Mike Turner, R-Ohio, voted against the rule.
Amidst the heated discussions and negotiations on the House floor, Johnson engaged with key stakeholders, including House Freedom Caucus Chairman Andy Harris, R-Md., to address concerns and garner support for the bill.
Despite the challenges, GOP leaders are steadfast in their commitment to move forward with a full floor vote on the budget blueprint. The vote is scheduled for approximately 5:30 p.m. and requires a simple majority for approval.
In addition to the budget blueprint, the rule vote included language to block future House votes on rescinding Trump’s tariffs, highlighting the broader implications of the legislation.
President Trump met with Johnson and several GOP hard-liners to address their concerns and build consensus on the bill. He reiterated his support for significant spending cuts and urged swift approval of the legislation.
Johnson echoed Trump’s sentiments, emphasizing the progress made during their meeting and expressing confidence in securing the necessary votes for the bill. He highlighted the president’s engagement and support in pushing the legislation forward.
However, not all Republicans are on board with the budget blueprint, with Rep. Chip Roy, R-Texas, expressing reservations about the bill’s provisions. Despite Trump’s final pitch at the National Republican Congressional Committee’s dinner, some members remain skeptical about the bill’s potential impact.
As House Republicans navigate the challenges and complexities surrounding the GOP budget blueprint, the outcome of the upcoming vote will not only shape the economic landscape but also test the unity and resolve of the party as they work towards a common goal.
