How ‘Love Story’ Recreated Carolyn Bessette Kennedy’s Wedding Dress’
The wedding of Carolyn Bessette Kennedy and John F. Kennedy Jr. on Cumberland Island, Georgia in 1996 was intended to be a private affair. However, the photos and videos from their intimate nuptials have become iconic in the bridal industry. Bessette Kennedy’s fashion choices, especially her wedding dress designed by Narciso Rodriguez, have left a lasting impact.
Rudy Mance, the costume designer for the FX series “Love Story,” meticulously recreated Bessette Kennedy’s wedding ensemble for Episode 6. He studied photographs and archival footage to ensure accuracy in every detail. The champagne rehearsal dress, also designed by Rodriguez, was custom-made based on limited photographic references. Mance combined a champagne slip lining with a sheer beaded dress to replicate the shimmer and shine of the original gown.
For the ceremony dress, Mance used the exact fabric that Rodriguez had used 30 years earlier. By sourcing the fabric from the manufacturer’s mill in Italy, Mance was able to recreate the gown with precision. The tulle veil, gloves, and Manolo Blahnik shoes worn by Sarah Pidgeon, who plays Bessette Kennedy, were also authentic pieces sourced or remade for the episode.
While some moments in the episode allowed for creative liberties, such as Bessette Kennedy’s private moments before the ceremony, Mance still paid attention to historical accuracy. Pidgeon wore a vintage Calvin Klein slip dress as a nod to Bessette Kennedy’s time at the fashion house. Even small details like the emblem on a robe worn by Pidgeon in a bathtub scene were meticulously recreated.
The entire process of costuming Pidgeon and Paul Anthony Kelly, who plays JFK Jr., for the wedding scenes took upwards of three weeks. Mance and his team dedicated time to sourcing and recreating the outfits for the rest of the guests as well. The attention to detail and commitment to authenticity in recreating Carolyn Bessette Kennedy’s iconic wedding look truly brought her timeless style to life on screen. The wedding dress worn by Carolyn Bessette Kennedy in the FX series “Impeachment: American Crime Story” has been hailed as one of the most iconic and photographed wedding dresses of all time. Costume designer Ruth E. Carter, who worked on the show, described it as a challenging look to get right. However, she was determined to do justice to the original designer, Narciso Rodriguez, by paying her respects through her meticulous work.
One of the most memorable moments for Carter was witnessing the entire wedding scene come together on screen. Just like in real life, where Bessette Kennedy was famously late to her ceremony due to last-minute dress alterations, the crew on set was running behind schedule. This meant they had limited time to capture the candle-lit wedding ceremony before the sun set.
The filming took place on a hot day in upstate New York, with the crew working in a swampy and muddy environment after days of rain. Carter admitted feeling anxious about the delicate wedding dress in such conditions. However, when Bessette Kennedy, played by actress Margo Robbie, arrived on set in a Jeep, they managed to shoot the scene just in time before the sun disappeared. The end result was described as “movie magic” by Carter.
The attention to detail and dedication to honoring the original designer’s work shines through in the recreation of Bessette Kennedy’s iconic wedding dress. The entire process of bringing the historical event to life on screen was a labor of love for the costume designer and the crew involved in the production of “Impeachment: American Crime Story.”
