Despite its popularity, the drink has also faced criticism for seasonal overindulgence and commercialism.

Back in 2014, John Oliver, host of Last Week Tonight, vehemently opposed the pumpkin spice latte, declaring, “I will be subject to its tyranny no longer.” However, eleven years later, the PSL continues to thrive and remains Starbucks’ most popular seasonal offering.

The PSL serves as a significant draw for Starbucks, with foot traffic increasing by 24% on the day of its launch last year, according to Placer.ai, a business intelligence firm. This surge in visitors persisted throughout the week, highlighting the drink’s impact on driving sales for the coffee chain.

Starbucks has increasingly relied on seasonal menu launches, with approximately 10% of its annual sales coming from seasonal items.

However, the question remains whether price-conscious consumers will be willing to pay over $6 for the iconic latte once again this year.

Although the pumpkin spice latte was created in 2003, it wasn’t widely available until the following year.

Money’s data shows that in 2005, a grande-sized PSL was priced at $3.35, with the cost steadily rising over the years.

Since 2005, the average price of the autumn beverage has surged by approximately 94%, outpacing inflation rates. In comparison, overall prices have increased by 62.5% from fall 2005 to the present day, while coffee prices have risen by 68.5% during the same period.
