How Trump is increasing pressure in bid to acquire Greenland — his next big move
President Trump has escalated his efforts to acquire Greenland by using US trade leverage, announcing a new strategy that involves imposing a 10% tariff on key allies until a deal is made for the takeover of the territory. In a post on his Truth Social account, the president criticized Denmark, Norway, Sweden, France, Germany, and the UK for sending troops to Greenland for security purposes following discussions between Denmark, Greenland, and the US. Trump asserted that only the United States, under his leadership, is capable of engaging in this negotiation.
Furthermore, Trump ridiculed Greenland’s defense capabilities, claiming that they consist of “two dogsleds as protection, one added recently.” This statement reflects his dismissive attitude towards the island’s security measures.
Effective February 1, the president announced that the aforementioned countries will face a 10% tariff on all goods sent to the US until an agreement is reached for the complete purchase of Greenland. If no deal is finalized by June 1, Trump threatened to increase the tariff to 25%, further intensifying the economic pressure on these nations.
This bold move by President Trump demonstrates his determination to secure Greenland for the United States and his willingness to use trade policies as leverage in diplomatic negotiations. The situation underscores the complexities of international relations and the unconventional tactics employed by the current administration in pursuit of its strategic goals.
