Huawei reveals giant new AI chip cluster as Nvidia’s China issues rise

Huawei, the Chinese telecommunications giant, recently unveiled its new computing systems designed to power artificial intelligence using its proprietary Ascend chips. This announcement comes as Huawei intensifies its competition with Nvidia, a prominent U.S. rival in the AI chip market.

The company revealed plans to launch the “Atlas 950 SuperCluster” next year, showcasing its commitment to advancing AI technology. In response to U.S. restrictions on semiconductor access, Chinese companies like Huawei have shifted towards utilizing clusters of less efficient chips to achieve comparable computing capabilities.

Huawei also announced the release of three new versions of its Ascend chips by the end of 2028, aiming to double compute capabilities with each iteration. These chips serve as the foundation of Huawei’s AI computing infrastructure, which includes superclusters connected to superpods, built from multiple supernodes. These supernodes, based on Ascend chips, leverage innovative system design to overcome limitations imposed by U.S. sanctions.

The new Atlas 950 supernode is set to support 8,192 Ascend chips, with the Atlas 950 SuperCluster utilizing over 500,000 chips. An even more advanced Atlas 960 version, scheduled for launch in 2027, will support 15,488 Ascend chips per node, totaling more than 1 million chips in the full supercluster.

Huawei claims that its new supernodes will be the most powerful in the world in terms of computing power for several years. In a bold statement, Eric Xu, Huawei’s vice chairman, asserted that the upcoming Atlas 950 supernode would deliver 6.7 times more computing power than Nvidia’s NVL144 system planned for launch next year.

Huawei’s emphasis on computing power aligns with the Chinese government’s push for self-reliance on domestic chip technologies. While some experts caution that Huawei may exaggerate its capabilities, the company’s ambition to lead the global AI market cannot be underestimated.

In light of China’s efforts to promote homegrown alternatives to Nvidia, Huawei’s latest announcement underscores its determination to challenge established players in the AI chip industry. As tensions between China and Nvidia escalate, the competition is set to intensify, with both sides vying for dominance in the rapidly evolving AI landscape.
