Hulu and Disney+ will be combined into one app starting next year, Disney says
Disney to Integrate Hulu and Disney+ into Unified App Experience
Walt Disney Co. made a significant announcement during an earnings call, revealing their plans to merge Hulu and Disney+ into a single app. CEO Bob Iger shared that this move aims to create a “unified app experience” that will offer a wide range of entertainment, news, and sports content.
Iger emphasized, “This will create an impressive package of entertainment, pairing the highest caliber brands and franchises, great general entertainment kids programming, news, and industry-leading live sports content all in a single app.” The integration of the two streaming services is set to be completed by 2026, allowing consumers to access a seamless streaming experience.
One of the key benefits highlighted by Iger is the potential for increased advertising revenue through more efficient ad sales packaging. He also mentioned the possibility of introducing price elasticity in the future, providing new opportunities for Disney in the streaming market.
Additionally, Disney announced the launch of an enhanced ESPN App on August 21, which can be bundled with Disney+ and Hulu for a monthly subscription of $29.99. This strategic move aims to offer a comprehensive entertainment package to consumers.
The latest earnings report from Disney showcased a boost in profit, driven by a growth in streaming subscribers and strong performance in domestic theme parks. With a total of 183 million Disney+ and Hulu subscriptions, the company continues to solidify its position in the streaming industry.
Disney’s ownership of Hulu since 2019 has been a significant asset, and the recent completion of the purchase of the streaming service from Comcast’s NBCUniversal further strengthens its streaming portfolio.
