Hundreds Evacuated, Dozens Hospitalized After Ammonia Gas Leak In Oklahoma

In Weatherford, Oklahoma, a tanker truck leaking anhydrous ammonia gas in a hotel parking lot led to the evacuation of hundreds of people and shelter-in-place orders for others, authorities reported on Thursday.

The incident occurred around 10 p.m. on Wednesday, causing respiratory distress to individuals in the vicinity. Thirty-six people were taken to a local hospital, with eleven requiring further treatment at other medical facilities, city officials announced at a press conference.

By Thursday morning, approximately 500 to 600 individuals were housed in a shelter, while several nursing homes were evacuated, and schools remained closed for the day. A triangular area, including businesses, was advised to shelter in place and remain closed.

Evacuee Krystal Blackwell described the chaotic scene with emergency personnel in gas masks knocking on doors. “It was a little crazy to wake up to,” she told KWTV-TV, still in her pajamas inside her car.

Authorities assured that air quality was under surveillance, and the tanker truck had ceased emitting gas. However, slow wind conditions hindered gas dissipation efforts. Multiple agencies, including hazmat teams and the Oklahoma National Guard, were present to assist first responders during the emergency.

Interstate 40’s exit to Weatherford was closed off, as per authorities.

Anhydrous ammonia, commonly used as a fertilizer for corn and wheat crops, can cause burns if touched in its gaseous or liquid state. Just last week, an anhydrous ammonia leak following an explosion at a plant near Yazoo City, Mississippi, prompted evacuations.

Weatherford, with a population of around 12,000 residents, is situated approximately 70 miles west of Oklahoma City.
