Hunt on for gunman who killed congressional intern in DC
Federal authorities, including the FBI and ATF, are collaborating with the D.C. police to investigate the tragic shooting death of 21-year-old congressional intern, Eric Tarpinian-Jachym. The incident occurred near the intersection of 7th and M Street in the District, where Tarpinian-Jachym was struck by a stray bullet on Monday night. Despite efforts to save him, he succumbed to his injuries the following day.
While the shooting was targeted, Tarpinian-Jachym was not the intended victim, according to investigators. Two other individuals, a woman, and a 16-year-old boy were also injured in the shooting. The woman is in stable condition, while the juvenile, believed to be associated with the group responsible for the gunfire, remains hospitalized with injuries.
D.C. Police Chief Pamela Smith addressed the media, emphasizing the importance of video footage in the investigation. Although the footage is somewhat grainy, efforts are being made to enhance it with the assistance of the FBI. The suspect vehicle has been recovered, and authorities are working on ballistics analysis with the ATF.
Smith characterized the incident as a tragic event that the city hopes to prevent in the future. She revealed that an altercation between two groups escalated into gunfire at the location on Seventh Street, northwest. Despite thorough investigations, a weapon has not yet been recovered.
Tarpinian-Jachym, a dedicated intern for Rep. Ron Estes of Kansas, was a senior at the University of Massachusetts at Amherst, majoring in finance with a minor in political science. His promising future was cut short by this senseless act of violence.
As the investigation continues, authorities are determined to bring the perpetrator to justice and ensure the safety of the community. The collaboration between federal agencies and local law enforcement highlights the commitment to resolving this tragic incident and preventing similar occurrences in the future.
