Hyundai stops sales of some 2026 models and plans a recall after child’s death

Hyundai Motor North America has made the decision to halt sales of certain 2026 Hyundai Palisade models and initiate a recall of over 68,000 vehicles following a tragic incident that resulted in the death of a child. The carmaker announced on Friday that the issue stems from a problem with the second and third-row power seats, which allow occupants to adjust the seat position using electric controls. According to Hyundai, the seat controls may fail to detect contact with a person or object when the seat is folding or sliding.

As a result of this issue, Hyundai is pausing sales of 2026 Hyundai Palisade Limited and Calligraphy trims equipped with the power seats. The company is also in the process of preparing a recall that will encompass 60,515 vehicles manufactured in the U.S. and 7,967 vehicles in Canada. Hyundai has assured owners that the recall repair will be conducted at no cost to them, and in the interim, the company is working on an over-the-air software update that is expected to be available by the end of March.

The decision to take these measures came after a tragic incident involving a child and a Palisade vehicle. Hyundai expressed its deepest sympathies to the family of the child and stated that the incident is still under investigation. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration is also involved in gathering additional information regarding the incident.

Hyundai is urging owners of the affected 2026 Hyundai Palisade models to exercise caution when using the second- and third-row power seat functions. The carmaker advises owners to ensure that there are no objects or individuals, especially children, in the seat or seat-folding area before operating the power seat. Additionally, customers are advised to refrain from pressing the seatback button during entry or exit when utilizing the second-row one-touch tilt-and-slide feature to access the third row.

As the investigation continues and the recall process unfolds, Hyundai is committed to addressing the issue and ensuring the safety of its customers. By taking proactive measures and providing necessary repairs and updates, Hyundai aims to prevent any further incidents and prioritize the well-being of its consumers.
