Illegal immigrant Manuel Cruz Ramirez arrested by DHS after Oregon sanctuary release
The arrest of an illegal migrant in Oregon has sparked controversy over sanctuary policies and their impact on public safety. Manuel Cruz-Ramirez, a Mexican national, was charged with rape, purchasing sex with a minor, and sexual abuse, but was released on bail due to Marion County’s sanctuary status. It was only when he was caught using a fraudulent Mexican passport at Portland International Airport that he was apprehended by TSA and CBP agents.
According to DHS Assistant Secretary Tricia McLaughlin, Cruz-Ramirez’s case highlights the dangers of sanctuary policies that allow criminal illegal aliens to be released back into American communities. In non-sanctuary cities, he would have been referred to immigration officers before being released from detention. DHS also revealed that Cruz-Ramirez had been deported from the US in 2018 but re-entered the country at an unknown location and time. He is now in ICE custody, and his removal order has been reinstated.
The incident in Portland comes amid ongoing protests and tensions between federal law enforcement and agitators. Recently, DHS launched an investigation into an Oregon resident who was arrested with knives and materials to make Molotov cocktails, allegedly with the intention of attacking an ICE office. The individual reportedly planned to acquire an AR-15 rifle for the attack.
The divisive rhetoric surrounding ICE agents, with some Democrats likening them to Nazis and gestapo, has raised concerns about the safety of law enforcement officers. DHS Secretary Kristi Noem emphasized the importance of cooperation between local and federal authorities in maintaining public safety. Cities like Minneapolis and St. Paul, where such collaboration exists, have seen a decrease in crime rates.
The case of Manuel Cruz-Ramirez underscores the complex issues surrounding immigration enforcement and public safety. As the debate over sanctuary policies continues, it remains crucial to find a balance between protecting immigrant rights and ensuring the safety of all Americans.
