Illegal migrant charged in CBP officer’s shooting in dramatic court showdown with victim’s coworkers

An illegal immigrant, Christhian Aybar-Berroa, faced the wrath of Customs and Border Protection officers in a Manhattan federal courtroom as he was arraigned on an accessory-after-the-fact charge related to the shooting of an off-duty CBP officer. Aybar-Berroa, dressed in ripped jeans and a pricey t-shirt, was met by nearly three dozen officers who had been waiting for hours for the hearing to begin.

The botched robbery, which took place in Fort Washington Park on July 19, involved Aybar-Berroa as the getaway driver and his accomplice, Miguel Francisco Mora Nunez, who shot the off-duty CBP officer during the incident. The officer, who was shot in the face and arm, managed to return fire and hit Mora Nunez before he fled the scene.

After the shooting, Mora Nunez was driven to a hospital by Aybar-Berroa, who then left him outside before fleeing. The injured Mora Nunez has yet to be arraigned in the case, leaving Aybar-Berroa to face the consequences alone.

The CBP officers, frustrated by the delay in the proceedings, watched as Aybar-Berroa was ordered to be held in custody until a preliminary hearing on August 8. The illegal immigrant’s blank expression and unkempt appearance contrasted with the seriousness of the charges against him.

The case serves as a stark reminder of the dangers faced by law enforcement officers, both on and off duty, and highlights the risks posed by criminal activities involving illegal immigrants. As the investigation continues, the legal process will determine the fate of Aybar-Berroa and his alleged involvement in the shooting of the CBP officer.
