Illinois Gov. Pritzker says Trump trying to ‘manufacture a crisis’ as admin plans National Guard deployment to Chicago
Illinois Governor JB Pritzker, a Democrat, has strongly opposed President Donald Trump’s potential deployment of the National Guard to Chicago to address crime in the city. Pritzker stated that there is no emergency in Illinois that warrants federal intervention and that the state has not requested any assistance from the federal government.
Trump’s administration has recently increased federal law enforcement presence in Washington, DC, in an effort to combat crime. This move has included deploying hundreds of federal agents and National Guard troops to the streets of the capital. Now, Trump is considering a similar crackdown on crime in Chicago.
Reports suggest that the Pentagon has been planning a military deployment to Chicago for weeks, which could involve mobilizing thousands of National Guard troops next month. However, Governor Pritzker has made it clear that he opposes federalizing the Illinois National Guard or deploying troops from other states within the state’s borders.
Pritzker accused Trump of trying to create a crisis and politicize the situation to distract from other issues. He emphasized that the safety of Illinois residents is his top priority and that he will continue to follow the law to protect the state’s sovereignty.
Lieutenant Governor Juliana Stratton also criticized Trump’s potential deployment of federal troops in Chicago, stating that it is a ploy to create chaos for political gain. She highlighted the progress made in reducing crime in Chicago under the Pritzker-Stratton administration and emphasized that there is no justification for federal intervention in the city.
Mayor Brandon Johnson, another Democrat, raised concerns about the potential deployment of the National Guard to Chicago, stating that it could undermine the progress made in building trust between police and residents. He pointed to data showing a decrease in homicides, robberies, and shootings in the city over the past year.
Overall, Illinois officials are united in their opposition to federal intervention in Chicago and are committed to protecting the rights and freedoms of residents. They are determined to stand against any attempts to destabilize the city and will continue working towards building safer communities through local initiatives and reforms.
