Imperfect Women, Testaments Producers Elisabeth Moss, Lindsey McManus

Elisabeth Moss and Lindsey McManus are marking a significant milestone this week with the debut of Apple TV’s “Imperfect Women,” a project that holds special significance for the duo as it was the first project they pursued after establishing their production banner, Love & Squalor, six years ago.

In an interview with Variety, Moss revealed that “Imperfect Women” was the initial topic of discussion between her and McManus even before they officially formed a partnership. Despite initial uncertainties and the looming possibility of McManus teaming up with another partner, Moss took the initiative to send McManus the Araminta Hall novel in the fall of 2019, hoping to lay the foundation for a future collaboration.

McManus, who previously led Diablo Cody’s production company Vita Vera and worked as a scripted television and talent agent at WME, was immediately captivated by the book and encouraged Moss to acquire the rights. This marked the beginning of their producing journey together, with “Imperfect Women” becoming the first project they pitched to studios and networks.

The pitching process for “Imperfect Women” took place during the challenging times of the COVID-19 pandemic, forcing the industry to come to a halt. Despite the obstacles, Moss and McManus used this time to refine their producing vision for Love & Squalor, emphasizing the importance of trusting their instincts and collaborating with like-minded individuals.

The duo’s proactive approach led to fruitful partnerships and mentorships with prominent players in Hollywood, including Denise DiNovi, Warren Littlefield, Lucky Chap, Simpson Street, and others. Since the formation of Love & Squalor, Moss has been involved in producing or executive producing six titles, with McManus by her side for three of them.

As Moss and McManus navigate their roles as producers, they are committed to actively engaging in the creative process and learning from each project. Moss, who has been involved in production aspects since her early days on “The Handmaid’s Tale,” has earned praise for her dedication and hunger to grow in her producing role.

The launch of “Imperfect Women” on Apple TV signifies a significant moment for Love & Squalor, reflecting their dedication to quality over expedience. Moss and McManus are gearing up for the release of “The Testaments” and other upcoming projects, showcasing their versatility and commitment to delivering compelling content.

With a growing team and a clear focus on making meaningful content, Love & Squalor continues to thrive in the competitive landscape of the entertainment industry. Moss and McManus are grateful for the opportunity to create and own their projects, embodying the ethos of “Make Stuff” that drives their production company forward.
