Indicted Dem asks ICE acting director Todd Lyons whether he thinks he’s ‘going to hell’
Rep. LaMonica McIver (D-NJ) made headlines during a House Homeland Security Committee hearing when she questioned acting ICE Director Todd Lyons about his religious beliefs and the consequences of his actions. McIver asked Lyons, “How do you think Judgment Day will work for you with so much blood on your hands?” after confirming that he identifies as religious. Lyons responded by refusing to entertain the question.
During the heated exchange, McIver, who was previously indicted for impeding law enforcement during a visit to an immigration facility, continued to press Lyons. She asked him directly, “Do you think you’re going to hell, Mr. Lyons?” The intense questioning led Committee Chairman Andrew Garbarino (R-NY) to intervene and remind the participants about maintaining decorum during the proceedings.
McIver defended her line of questioning by pointing out the frequent references to religion and the Bible in political discussions. She argued that it was appropriate for her to ask such probing questions given the context of the conversation. Despite the contentious nature of the exchange, both McIver and Lyons remained steadfast in their positions.
The exchange between McIver and Lyons serves as a reminder of the deep divide and passionate disagreements that exist within the realm of immigration policy and enforcement. The clash of ideologies and beliefs underscores the complexity of the issues at hand and the challenges faced by those tasked with enforcing immigration laws. As the debate continues to unfold, it is evident that the intersection of politics, religion, and morality will remain a contentious and divisive topic for lawmakers and the public alike.
