Innocent 16-year-old girl shot in head and killed outside NYC charter school: cops

A tragic incident unfolded outside a Bronx school on Monday evening, resulting in the death of a 16-year-old girl who was innocently riding her scooter. The girl, identified as Evette Jeffrey, was not involved in the altercation that occurred among teenage boys leaving the schoolyard of the Dr. Richard Izquierdo Health and Science Charter School.
According to police officials, a 14-year-old boy allegedly fired at least three shots during a fight outside the school building, ultimately striking Jeffrey in the head. Security footage captured the moments leading up to the shooting, showing a group of youths engaging in a brawl that escalated into gunfire.
NYPD Commissioner Jessica Tisch described the sequence of events, highlighting how the altercation turned deadly as the teenage boy fired shots into the crowd, with Jeffrey becoming an unintended victim. Despite efforts by a friend to shield her from the gunfire, Jeffrey was fatally wounded and pronounced dead at Lincoln Hospital.
Mayor Eric Adams and other city officials visited the scene to offer condolences and address the tragic loss of life. Adams emphasized the need for creating safe environments for young people and urged parents to be vigilant about monitoring their children’s activities, including checking their belongings for any signs of weapons.
The incident marked the first murder in the 42nd Precinct this year, amid an overall decline in violent crime in the Bronx compared to the previous year. While no arrests had been made as of late Monday, the investigation into the shooting is ongoing, with authorities working to apprehend the suspect responsible for Jeffrey’s untimely death.
The community mourns the loss of Evette Jeffrey, a promising young life cut short by senseless violence. As the investigation continues, the hope is for justice to be served and for measures to be taken to prevent such tragedies from occurring in the future.
