Instagram to alert parents when teens search for info on suicide or self-harm
Meta-owned Instagram is taking steps to enhance safety features on its platform, particularly for teenage users. The company announced that parents will soon be alerted if their teenage child uses the app to search for content related to suicide or self-harm. This decision comes as social media platforms face scrutiny over their impact on young people’s mental health.
Starting next week, parents who utilize Instagram’s supervision tools will receive notifications through email, text, WhatsApp, or in-app alerts if their teen repeatedly searches for terms related to self-harm or suicide within a short timeframe. The message will inform parents of the searches and provide resources on how to approach conversations about mental health with their children.
Meta emphasized that the majority of teens do not actively search for suicide or self-harm content on Instagram. When such searches do occur, the platform’s policy is to block them and direct users to support resources and helplines. The company did not specify the exact number of searches that would trigger a parental alert, only mentioning that a threshold was chosen to require a few searches in a short period while prioritizing caution.
Initially, this new safety feature will be rolled out in the U.S., the United Kingdom, Australia, and Canada, with plans to expand to other regions later in the year. In addition to this update, Meta introduced age-based content restrictions last year to prevent users under 18 from accessing search results for certain terms like “alcohol” or “gore.” The platform already shields teens from search results related to suicide, self-harm, and eating disorders.
These advancements in safety features come amid an ongoing trial in Los Angeles investigating whether platforms like Instagram and YouTube are designed to addict young users. Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg recently faced questioning about Instagram’s impact on young users and the company’s efforts to increase engagement. Despite Instagram’s requirement that users be at least 13 years old to sign up, Zuckerberg acknowledged the challenges of enforcing this rule due to users falsifying their age. Instagram employs measures like requesting birthday details, photo identification, and videos to verify users’ ages.
As the digital landscape continues to evolve, social media companies are under increasing pressure to prioritize user safety, especially for vulnerable populations like teenagers. By implementing proactive measures like parental alerts for concerning searches, platforms like Instagram are taking steps in the right direction to promote a safer online environment for all users.
