Iran forms interim leadership council as President Pezeshkian resurfaces

Following the tragic death of Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, the supreme leader of Iran, the country has swiftly established an interim leadership council, as reported by Iranian state TV on Sunday.

This newly formed interim leadership council comprises key figures such as Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian, the head of the judiciary, and Ayatollah Alireza Arafi, who has been appointed as the representative of the Guardian Council.

As per the provisions of the Islamic Republic constitution, the Guardian Council is comprised of 12 members, consisting of six “faghihs” or Islamic jurists, and six Muslim “experts” specializing in various fields of law.

President Pezeshkian, who was reportedly targeted in a joint U.S.-Israel attack on Saturday, made a public appearance on Iranian state TV to announce that the interim leadership council has commenced its duties in the wake of Khamenei’s passing.

In a televised message, Pezeshkian emphasized the robust efforts of the Iranian armed forces in quelling the enemy’s strongholds. Additionally, Ali Larijani, Secretary of the Supreme National Security Council of Iran, expressed his profound sorrow over the loss of Khamenei, stating that his demise has deeply affected the nation.

Larijani also issued a stern warning to the United States, cautioning that any aggression towards Iran would be met with fierce resistance from the Iranian people. He outlined the formation of a temporary leadership council comprising the president, judiciary head, and a jurist from the Guardian Council.

A spokesperson for the Guardian Council reiterated that the country’s constitution provides for the establishment of the leadership council during such transitional periods until a new leadership is finalized.

Given the heightened tensions and ongoing conflict, it is imperative to expedite the process of determining new leadership. The recent joint U.S.-Israel operation resulted in the deaths of numerous Iranian commanders, including Abdolrahim Mousavi, the chief of staff of the armed forces. The IDF confirmed that several top Iranian security officials were targeted and eliminated in the strikes.

The loss of key military figures has dealt a significant blow to the Iranian security leadership. The international community is closely monitoring the developments in Iran as the country navigates through this critical juncture.
