IRS Updates 2026 Tax Brackets and Deductions

The Internal Revenue Service, despite being partially operational during the government shutdown, has recently announced the new federal income tax brackets and standard deductions for the 2026 tax year. These adjustments are made annually to account for inflation and ensure that taxpayers are not pushed into higher tax brackets due to modest pay increases.

For tax year 2026, the standard deduction has been set at $16,100 for singles, representing a 2.2% increase from the previous year. For heads of household, the standard deduction is $24,150, and for married couples filing jointly, it stands at $32,200.

The most significant changes are in the federal income tax brackets for 2026. The IRS has increased the income ranges associated with each bracket to align with the standard deduction. This adjustment aims to prevent taxpayers from moving into higher tax brackets solely due to inflation. The maximum tax rate for 2026 remains at 37%, with seven tax brackets in total.

It’s essential to understand how tax brackets work. Your top tax bracket is the rate you pay on the specific portion of your income within that bracket, not your entire earnings. For instance, a single filer with $60,000 of taxable income in 2026 would pay 22% only on the portion exceeding $50,400.

Moreover, over 60 tax provisions are affected by the inflation adjustments, including increases to the earned income tax credit (EITC) and the contribution limits for health care flexible spending accounts (FSAs). The EITC is rising from $8,046 to $8,231 for taxpayers with three or more qualifying children. Additionally, the contribution limit for FSAs is increasing to $3,400 in 2026, with a carryover provision limit of $680.
