Is Disney Theme Park in Abu Dhabi Going Ahead Despite Iran War?
The ongoing U.S.-Israel-Iran conflict has raised concerns about the future of Disney’s planned theme park in Abu Dhabi amidst escalating tensions in the Middle East. Iranian military forces have been targeting neighboring countries, including threats to recreational areas and tourist sites. However, despite the turmoil, there are indications that the project is still moving forward.
During Disney’s recent shareholder meeting, new CEO Josh D’Amaro confirmed that the Abu Dhabi theme park on Yas Island is still on track. The project was initially announced last year by D’Amaro when he led the Disney Experiences division. Miral, the Abu Dhabi-based company responsible for creating immersive destinations, also reiterated its commitment to bringing Disney to Yas Island. CEO Mohamed Abdalla Al Zaabi expressed excitement for the project’s future and emphasized ongoing collaboration with Disney leadership.
The Abu Dhabi Disneyland is part of a licensing deal with Miral, where Disney does not own the park but receives royalties. Outgoing CEO Bob Iger explained that Disney’s intellectual property is licensed to Miral for the project. The Abu Dhabi theme park is set to be the most technologically advanced Disney park yet, joining the company’s existing resorts in California, Florida, Tokyo, Paris, Hong Kong, and Shanghai.
Amidst the current political climate in the region, international lawyer Joseph Gulino suggested that iconic U.S. brands may reconsider their investments. He noted that while this doesn’t necessarily mean canceling plans, there could be delays until the situation stabilizes. Disney Experiences declined to comment on the situation when contacted by Variety.
The fate of the Abu Dhabi Disney theme park remains uncertain amidst the ongoing conflict in the Middle East. However, with continued commitment from Miral and Disney leadership, there is hope that the project will proceed as planned. The park promises to be a unique addition to Disney’s global portfolio, offering a tech-centric experience for visitors in the region. Stay tuned for updates on this exciting venture.
