Islanders’ Matthew Schaefer, Ryan Pulock relying on each other
Matthew Schaefer Makes NHL Debut with Support from Ryan Pulock
ST. LOUIS — The night before he made his NHL debut, Matthew Schaefer found himself in deep conversation with veteran player Ryan Pulock. Pulock, 31 years old, took the 18-year-old Schaefer under his wing, discussing the excitement and nerves that come with playing in his first professional game.
During their conversation, Schaefer, who is considering getting a tattoo, inquired about a tattoo that Pulock had on his chest. The tattoo depicted a Maple Leaf with two hockey sticks, a tribute to Pulock’s late brother, Brock. Brock tragically passed away at the age of 13 following injuries sustained in a car accident, in which Ryan was also involved.
Although Pulock had shared this story sparingly in the past, Schaefer, who has his own personal experience with loss after losing his mother, was unaware of the emotional significance behind the tattoo. Pulock opened up to Schaefer, connecting over their shared experiences of grief and adversity.
As Schaefer prepared for his NHL debut, Pulock’s mentorship and support played a crucial role in helping the young player navigate the challenges and pressures of professional hockey. The bond formed between the two players, rooted in shared experiences and mutual respect, highlighted the importance of solidarity and camaraderie within the hockey community.
Matthew Schaefer’s debut in the NHL not only marked a milestone in his career but also served as a testament to the power of connection and mentorship in overcoming obstacles and achieving success in the face of adversity.
