Jailed journalists win Sakharov Prize for speaking against injustice, European Parliament says

Two brave journalists, one in Belarus and the other in Georgia, were recently awarded the prestigious Andrei Sakharov Prize for their unwavering courage in the face of injustice.

Andrzej Poczobut, a Polish journalist in Belarus, was imprisoned for his coverage of anti-government protests following a disputed election. Despite his deteriorating health and harsh conditions in prison, he refused to seek a pardon and remained steadfast in his commitment to truth and freedom.

Mzia Amaghlobeli, a Georgian journalist, was sentenced to two years in prison for standing up to a police chief at a protest. She urged the opposition to continue fighting for justice and democracy, even in the face of adversity.

Their unwavering courage in the fight against oppression has made them symbols of resistance and hope. The Sakharov Prize serves as a powerful reminder of the importance of press freedom and human rights in the face of authoritarian regimes.
