Jake Johnson to Play Private Investigator in NBC Comedy Pilot
Jake Johnson has landed the lead role in a new private investigator comedy pilot for NBC, created by Dan Goor and Luke Del Tredici. The untitled single-camera show, directed by Akiva Schaffer, follows the story of Mickey, a smart and cynical former LAPD cop turned private eye who is trying to piece his life back together after a personal crisis three years ago.
The plot of the pilot remains vague, with the logline teasing that it will continue the legacy of Los Angeles private eyes like Philip Marlowe. Johnson’s character, Mickey, is described as a man with a knack for solving cases, despite his heartbreak and disillusionment. It’s unclear whether Mickey will be a hard-boiled detective or a softer, more comedic version of the classic private eye archetype.
Jake Johnson is best known for his role as Nick Miller in the hit sitcom “New Girl,” which aired for seven seasons. He has since starred in various TV shows and movies, including the animated comedy “Hoops” on Netflix and the upcoming series “Maximum Pleasure Guaranteed” on Apple TV. Johnson has also made a name for himself in the film industry, with notable roles in the “Spider-Verse” animated franchise and movies like “Let’s Be Cops” and “Jurassic World.” He has also ventured into writing, producing, and directing, making his feature directorial debut with “Self Reliance.”
Goor and Del Tredici are co-writing and executive producing the pilot, with Schaffer serving as director and executive producer. Johnson will also produce the show in addition to starring in it. The project is being produced by Universal Television.
Interestingly, NBC is also developing another pilot centered around a private investigator, a reboot of “The Rockford Files” with David Boreanaz set to play the lead role of Jim Rockford.
Overall, the new comedy pilot featuring Jake Johnson promises to bring a fresh take on the classic private eye genre, with a talented cast and creative team behind the scenes. Fans of Johnson’s work can look forward to seeing him in this exciting new project on NBC.
