Jayden Daniels blindsided by Commanders over Kliff Kingsbury firing as OC mutually parts ways for head coach opportunity: Report

The Washington Commanders made headlines on Tuesday when they announced the mutual parting of ways with offensive coordinator Kliff Kingsbury. However, it seems that this decision did not sit well with several players on the team.

According to NFL insider Jordan Schultz, Washington quarterback Jayden Daniels and other key offensive stars were disappointed by the news of Kingsbury’s departure. Daniels, in particular, was said to be “blindsided” by the move, as he had publicly supported Kingsbury during a press conference just the day before.

The players reportedly believed that Kingsbury would only leave the franchise if he was offered a head coaching position elsewhere. Despite no reports of Kingsbury taking up such a role, the Commanders made the decision to part ways with him after a disappointing 5-12 season in 2025.

In addition to Kingsbury, the team also announced the departure of Joe Whitt Jr. as their defensive coordinator. The Commanders are clearly looking to make significant changes following their underwhelming performance last season.

Jayden Daniels, the Commanders’ quarterback, had a tumultuous 2025 season marred by injuries. He struggled with a knee sprain early on, followed by a hamstring injury and a broken arm in Week 9. Despite attempting a comeback later in the season, Daniels ultimately missed 10 games due to injury.

In his limited playing time, Daniels managed to tally 1,262 passing yards, eight touchdowns, and three interceptions. He also contributed 278 rushing yards and two touchdowns on the ground, showcasing his dual-threat abilities when healthy.

As the Commanders look towards the future, it will be interesting to see how they navigate the changes in coaching staff and support Daniels in his quest for a successful and injury-free season. The team will need to regroup and refocus to bounce back from a disappointing campaign and compete at a higher level in the upcoming NFL season.
