JD Vance slams Mamdani over 9/11 comment about ‘his auntie’

Vice President JD Vance recently took aim at New York City mayoral candidate Zohran Mamdani, criticizing him for suggesting that his aunt was the “real victim of 9/11.” As early voting kicked off in NYC, Mamdani, a leading contender in the mayoral race, shared a personal story about his aunt feeling unsafe in her hijab after the tragic events of 9/11.

In response, Vance mocked Mamdani’s remarks, stating that according to the Democrat, his aunt was the true victim of 9/11 because she allegedly received some unpleasant looks. Mamdani also highlighted the struggles faced by Muslim New Yorkers who feel marginalized and discriminated against in the city they call home.

Mamdani went on to accuse former Governor Andrew Cuomo of engaging in Islamophobic rhetoric when Cuomo insinuated on a radio show that Mamdani would be “cheering” in the event of another 9/11-style attack. Cuomo questioned Mamdani’s ability to lead the city through a crisis situation, sparking controversy and accusations of bigotry from Mamdani and his supporters.

Despite the backlash, Mamdani stood firm in his condemnation of Cuomo’s comments, labeling them as Islamophobic, racist, and disgusting. The exchange between Mamdani and Cuomo highlighted the tension and divisiveness present in the NYC mayoral race, with candidates clashing over issues of identity, leadership, and inclusivity.

As the mayoral race heats up and tensions continue to escalate, it remains to be seen how these controversies will impact the outcome of the election. Stay tuned for more updates on the NYC mayoral race as the candidates vie for the chance to lead one of the most diverse and dynamic cities in the world.
