JetBlue to end service at Miami International Airport
JetBlue Airways has announced that it will be ending its service at Miami International Airport as part of its cost-cutting measures to eliminate less profitable routes. The last JetBlue flight out of Miami International is scheduled for September 3, according to airport officials.
Miami International is not a key hub for JetBlue, with the airline operating only one route into the airport from Boston’s Logan International Airport. The airline serves over three dozen cities in the U.S., but Miami is not a significant focus for their operations.
Passengers traveling to South Florida can still choose to fly with JetBlue out of nearby Palm Beach International Airport and Fort Lauderdale–Hollywood International Airport. Fort Lauderdale, located about 25 miles north of Miami, offers 70 daily flights to over 30 destinations, making it a convenient alternative for JetBlue customers.
In addition to ending service at Miami International, JetBlue will also suspend its year-round service between Boston and Seattle starting October 25. The airline plans to offer flights between the two cities only during the summer season, as part of their strategy to reduce costs and optimize their route network.
These changes are in line with the recent memo from JetBlue CEO Joanna Geraghty, where she mentioned the need to wind down underperforming routes to address the challenges posed by the current travel demand. Despite hopes for a rebound in demand, the airline is still facing financial difficulties and relying on borrowed funds to sustain operations.
JetBlue initially added Miami International Airport to its network four years ago, operating up to 14 daily flights at its peak. Customers with flights booked to or from Miami after September 3 will be contacted by JetBlue and offered alternative travel options via Fort Lauderdale or a full refund.
Overall, these changes reflect JetBlue’s commitment to adapting to the evolving travel landscape and optimizing its operations for long-term sustainability. With a focus on reducing costs and improving efficiency, the airline aims to navigate through the challenges posed by the ongoing pandemic and ensure a strong position in the market.
