Jets release Anders Carlson after signing ‘Thiccer Kicker’ Harrison Mevis
The New York Jets have made a significant roster move by releasing veteran kicker Anders Carlson and signing Harrison Mevis, also known as the “Thiccer Kicker.” Carlson, a 2023 sixth-round pick from the Packers, had a brief stint with the Jets, playing in five games and making 8 out of 10 field goals. He joined the team’s practice squad in November after being released by the 49ers.
On the other hand, Mevis, a 6-foot, 242-pound kicker from Missouri, gained fame for his accuracy during the 2025 UFL season with the Birmingham Stallions, where he made 20 out of 21 attempts. He signed with the Stallions in December after being released by the Carolina Panthers earlier in the year, but he has yet to make an appearance in an NFL game.
The Jets’ decision to bring in Mevis reflects their commitment to improving their kicking game, which was a major issue during the 2024 season. The team struggled with inconsistency at the position, rotating through multiple kickers throughout the year. This culminated in Greg Joseph becoming the fifth kicker of the season in January. The Jets finished the season with a 5-12 record and missed the playoffs.
Mevis now joins a revamped Jets team led by first-year head coach Aaron Glenn and general manager Darren Mougey. The team is looking to address their kicking woes and make a stronger push for success in the upcoming season. With Mevis’ proven track record of accuracy and strong leg, the Jets are hopeful that he can provide stability and reliability in the kicking game moving forward.
