JJ Velazquez hits NYC with $100M lawsuit over wrongful conviction

Jon-Adrian “JJ” Velazquez, a man who spent nearly 24 years behind bars for a murder he did not commit, is seeking justice and compensation for his wrongful conviction. Velazquez is suing the city of New York for $100 million, alleging that he was wrongfully arrested and prosecuted for a crime he did not commit. Additionally, his mother and two sons have filed a separate lawsuit seeking $50 million in damages.

Velazquez was convicted in 1998 for the shooting death of ex-cop Albert Ward during a botched robbery in Harlem. He was sentenced to 25 years to life in prison after authorities claimed he was one of the perpetrators involved in the crime. Despite maintaining his innocence, Velazquez spent over two decades in prison before being granted clemency by then-Governor Andrew Cuomo in 2021.

Over the years, supporters rallied behind Velazquez, advocating for his innocence and filing motions to overturn his conviction. High-profile figures like Martin Sheen joined the campaign to free Velazquez, and his case was featured in an NBC News podcast titled “Letters from Sing Sing.” Despite these efforts, Velazquez remained behind bars until new evidence came to light.

In 2022, Manhattan District Attorney Alvin Bragg ordered a re-investigation into Velazquez’s case, leading to the discovery that DNA evidence did not match Velazquez, clearing him of any involvement in the crime. Subsequently, on September 30, 2024, Velazquez was exonerated, bringing an end to his long and unjust incarceration.

In a statement following his exoneration, Bragg expressed hope for a new chapter in Velazquez’s life, acknowledging the years he spent living under the shadow of a wrongful conviction. Velazquez, in his pursuit of justice, hopes that the lawsuits against the city will shed light on the damage caused by wrongful convictions and lead to changes in the justice system.

The journey of Jon-Adrian “JJ” Velazquez serves as a stark reminder of the flaws in the criminal justice system and the importance of fighting for truth and justice. His story highlights the resilience and determination of individuals wronged by the system and the need for accountability and reform to prevent similar injustices in the future.
