John Cena Fights Himself in DC TV Show

San Diego Comic Con Welcomes John Cena as Peacemaker

San Diego Comic Con was treated to a special appearance on Saturday as John Cena made a grand entrance dressed as his DC Universe character Peacemaker for the show’s Hall H panel. Joining him were showrunner and DC Studios co-president James Gunn, along with co-stars Frank Grillo, Jennifer Holland, Freddie Stroma, Steve Agee, Sol Rodriguez, and Tim Meadows.

The panel started off with the premiere of the new Season 2 trailer, which showcased Cena’s Peacemaker venturing into an alternate dimension where he faces new challenges. Rejected by Holland’s Emilia Harcourt, Peacemaker finds himself in a universe that causes inter-dimensional chaos. Grillo’s Rick Flag Sr., head of the mysterious A.R.G.U.S. company, is also on the hunt for Peacemaker after the death of his son Rick Flag Jr. in “The Suicide Squad.”

The cast delved into the iconic opening credits of “Peacemaker,” including the viral dance sequence from Season 1. Gunn mentioned that they aimed to maintain the essence of the first season while adding new elements to the Season 2 opening credits.

“There’s a different vibe to it. New characters, different dancers,” Gunn shared.

Holland revealed a special homage to “Dirty Dancing” in the new dance moves featured in the opening credits.

“We have an amazing choreographer who brought James’ vision to life. I had a blast doing it. I even got to do the iconic lift from ‘Dirty Dancing,’ which was a dream come true,” she expressed.

As the discussion continued, Grillo humorously mentioned his unexpected journey to becoming the best dancer on stage.

“Peacemaker” Season 2 is set to premiere on HBO Max on Aug. 21, featuring eight episodes. The new season arrives after a three-year gap from Season 1, during which Gunn and Safran took on leadership roles at DC Studios, ushering in a new era for the DC Universe.

Cena shines as the patriotic mercenary Christopher Smith, originally introduced as Peacemaker in Gunn’s “The Suicide Squad.” The character’s journey in Season 1 involved a mission to eliminate parasitic aliens threatening humanity, ultimately leading to a heroic showdown. Cena’s Peacemaker has also made appearances in other DC projects, including a cameo in Gunn’s “Superman” as a guest on a talk show.
