John Torode Admits Racist Language Allegation in ‘MasterChef’ Probe
The recent findings of a racist language allegation against John Torode, co-host of BBC’s “MasterChef,” have sent shockwaves through the culinary world. In a statement posted on Instagram, Torode confirmed that he is the individual accused of using racial language on one occasion during a conversation in 2018 or 2019. Despite maintaining his innocence and stating that he has no recollection of the incident, Torode expressed deep regret and emphasized that he has always believed racial language is unacceptable.
The investigation conducted by Lewis Silkin also led to the termination of Torode’s long-time co-host, Gregg Wallace, whose nearly two-decade tenure on “MasterChef” came to an end after 45 of 83 allegations against him were substantiated. The report additionally upheld two standalone allegations of inappropriate language, one of which involved Torode’s use of racist language.
While Wallace’s departure was deemed inevitable, Torode’s future with the show remains uncertain as the BBC has yet to make a statement regarding his status. The Lewis Silkin investigation, which spanned seven months and interviewed 78 witnesses, delved into the workplace culture and complaint handling procedures of the production dating back to 2005.
The impact of these findings on “MasterChef,” a flagship culinary series that has captivated audiences worldwide since Torode and Wallace took the helm in 2005, is significant. The show’s future format now hangs in the balance with Wallace’s exit confirmed and questions surrounding Torode’s involvement.
As the culinary world grapples with these revelations, the uncertainty surrounding the future of “MasterChef” looms large. It remains to be seen how the show will move forward in the aftermath of these damning allegations.
