Johnson defends calling anti-Trump protests ‘hate America’ rallies
House Speaker Mike Johnson recently defended his characterization of the “No Kings” rallies, which took place over the weekend in opposition to President Donald Trump, as “hate America” rallies. Johnson clarified that his comments were aimed at the message of the protesters and not the entire Democratic Party.
During an interview on ABC News’ “This Week,” Johnson faced questions about his remarks linking anarchists, antifa, and pro-Hamas advocates to the modern Democratic Party. He insisted that he was not labeling the entire party but rather highlighting concerning trends within it. Johnson pointed to the upcoming mayoral election in New York City, where a socialist candidate is poised to win, as evidence of the rise of Marxism within the Democratic Party.
When pressed about his delay in swearing in Democratic Rep.-elect Adelita Grijalva, Johnson explained that he was following procedural norms and waiting for the legislative session to resume. He compared his actions to those of House Speaker Nancy Pelosi in similar situations.
Regarding former Rep. George Santos’ sentence commutation by President Trump, Johnson expressed support for the decision, emphasizing the importance of redemption. He brushed off criticism about the pardon being politically motivated, stating that transparency was key.
On the topic of ICE enforcement operations, Johnson acknowledged concerns about the optics of deporting long-term residents with families but reiterated the importance of upholding the rule of law. He defended ICE’s focus on removing dangerous criminals while acknowledging the difficult circumstances faced by families affected by deportation.
When questioned about military operations in the Caribbean Sea, Johnson expressed confidence in the administration’s approach to national security, emphasizing the need for strength to protect Americans from threats like drug cartels smuggling dangerous substances into the country.
Overall, Johnson’s responses highlighted his commitment to upholding the rule of law, ensuring national security, and addressing contentious issues with a focus on transparency and accountability.
