Judge sets bail at $5.5M for farming tycoon accused of killing wife
Farming magnate Michael Abatti, who stands accused of fatally shooting his wife, may soon be released from custody after entering a plea of not guilty. However, the price tag for his freedom will be a hefty one, totaling millions of dollars.
The 63-year-old is charged with the murder of his former beauty queen wife, Kerri Ann Abatti, at their luxurious $1.6 million residence in Pinetop, Arizona. The couple was embroiled in a contentious divorce battle at the time of her tragic death on November 20.
Following his extradition from California to Arizona on Tuesday, an Arizona judge increased Abatti’s bail from $5 million to $5.5 million. While this amount may seem exorbitant to most individuals, Abatti’s attorney, Owen Roth, revealed that his client is “very wealthy.” However, Roth declined to disclose Abatti’s net worth or whether he intends to post bail.
Abatti’s substantial wealth is evident from his 2018 crop earnings, which exceeded $10 million. Described as wielding significant influence over the water supply in California’s desert region due to his role on the Imperial County Water District board, Abatti’s financial standing is formidable.
Despite his affluence, Abatti allegedly took his wife’s life amid a dispute over spousal support. Kerri Ann Abatti had sought substantial financial assistance during the divorce proceedings to maintain her lavish lifestyle, but she was reportedly receiving far less than she requested. Ultimately, Abatti agreed to pay her $6,400 per month.
The tragic incident unfolded when Abatti purportedly traveled from California to Arizona to commit the heinous act at their opulent residence before promptly returning. He was apprehended on December 23, with prosecutors alleging that he shot his wife from outside the house.
Abatti, who was photographed in a specialized anti-suicide vest upon booking, is grappling with the repercussions of his actions. His lawyer expressed concerns about how the situation would impact his family, emphasizing Abatti’s deep care for his three children.
Amidst ongoing legal proceedings, Abatti’s attorneys have underscored his health issues requiring continual medical attention. They remain committed to securing the best possible outcome for their client as he prepares to appear in court on March 17.
In the midst of this tumultuous ordeal, Abatti’s quiet demeanor and dedication to his family have come to light. As the legal saga unfolds, his fate hangs in the balance, with his attorneys steadfast in their pursuit of justice for their client.
