Julio Iglesias denies sexual abuse allegations, calling them ‘absolutely untrue’

MADRID — Julio Iglesias Denies Sexual Assault Allegations

Julio Iglesias, the Grammy-winning singer, has vehemently denied allegations of sexual assault made by two former employees, calling the accusations “absolutely untrue.”

Media reports surfaced earlier this week claiming that Iglesias had sexually and physically assaulted two women who worked at his residences in the Dominican Republic and the Bahamas between January and October 2021. Spanish prosecutors have announced that they are currently investigating the allegations.

In response to the allegations, Iglesias took to Instagram to address the situation, stating, “With deep sorrow, I respond to the accusations made by two people who previously worked at my home. I deny having abused, coerced or disrespected any woman. These accusations are absolutely false and cause me great sadness.”

Spanish media outlets elDiario.es and Univision Noticias recently published a joint investigative report that spanned three years, detailing the allegations of misconduct against Iglesias.

Formal allegations against Iglesias were received by a Spanish high court on Jan. 5 from an unnamed party. It is possible that Iglesias may be brought in front of the Madrid-based court, which has jurisdiction over crimes committed by Spanish citizens abroad.

Despite the controversy, Iglesias, who is 82 years old, remains one of the most successful musical artists in the world, with over 300 million records sold in more than a dozen languages. He gained popularity in the United States and worldwide in the 1970s and ’80s after starting his career in Spain. Iglesias is also the father of pop singer Enrique Iglesias.

In 1988, Iglesias won a Grammy for Best Latin Pop Performance for his album “Un Hombre Solo” and received a Lifetime Achievement Award at the Grammys in 2019.

Addressing the situation on social media, Iglesias expressed, “I had never experienced such malice, but I still have the strength for people to know the full truth and to defend my dignity against such a serious affront.” He also expressed gratitude to those who have shown support during this challenging time.
