Justice Department sues Fulton County for 2020 election records
The Department of Justice has taken legal action against Fulton County, Georgia, in a bid to access records from the 2020 election. This move is seen as part of the ongoing efforts by the Trump administration to investigate the election that the former president lost.
The lawsuit filed by the Justice Department seeks various documents related to the 2020 general election, including ballot stubs and signature envelopes. Attorney General Pam Bondi is leading the investigation into Fulton County’s adherence to federal election laws.
According to the lawsuit, the Justice Department had previously sent a letter to the Fulton County clerk requesting the records, but received no response. This lack of cooperation prompted the DOJ to pursue legal action to compel the county to provide the necessary documents.
President Donald Trump has persistently claimed without evidence that he won the 2020 election, including in Georgia where he was defeated by Joe Biden. In a separate incident, Trump and 18 others were indicted in Fulton County for allegedly attempting to overturn the election results. However, Trump pleaded not guilty and all charges against him and the other defendants were dismissed last month.
In response to inquiries from ABC News, the Fulton County clerk’s office declined to comment on the ongoing litigation, stating that they are not at liberty to discuss matters related to pending legal cases.
The lawsuit filed by the Department of Justice underscores the ongoing scrutiny and legal challenges surrounding the 2020 election. As the investigation unfolds, it remains to be seen how the legal proceedings will impact the broader political landscape and public perception of the election results.
