Kansas sheriff’s deputy shot and killed responding to domestic violence call
A tragic incident unfolded in Kansas City, Kansas, on Saturday, resulting in the loss of 34-year-old Wyandotte County Sheriff’s Deputy Elijah Ming. Deputy Ming was responding to a domestic violence call when he was fatally shot by a gunman at a residence in southwest Kansas City.
The harrowing events began when a woman, fearful for her safety, sought assistance from law enforcement as she prepared to move out of the home where she had been threatened by a man with a gun. Deputy Ming, a dedicated 9-year veteran of the Wyandotte County Sheriff’s Office, selflessly responded to the call for help, ultimately sacrificing his life in the line of duty.
Chief Karl Oakman of the Kansas City Police Department provided details of the incident, revealing that Deputy Ming and a Kansas City police officer were ambushed by the armed suspect upon approaching the residence. While Deputy Ming tragically lost his life in the gunfire, the Kansas City officer escaped unharmed.
Additional law enforcement officers swiftly arrived at the scene, engaging in a tense standoff with the suspect, identified as 38-year-old Shawn Harris. Following an exchange of gunfire, Harris retreated into the home and barricaded himself. Police negotiators worked diligently to establish communication with Harris, ultimately securing his surrender after an hour of negotiations.

In the aftermath of the tragedy, Kansas City Mayor Tyrone Gardner visited Ming’s grieving family at the hospital, urging the community to offer their thoughts and prayers for the bereaved loved ones. Expressing profound sorrow over the loss, Mayor Gardner emphasized the devastating impact of senseless violence on families and communities.
The investigation into the fatal shooting is being spearheaded by the Kansas Bureau of Investigation, with findings to be presented to the Wyandotte County District Attorney’s Office for determination of charges against the suspect.
