Katie Couric Blasts CBS News Chief Bari Weiss For Pulling ’60 Minutes’ Segment

Former CBS News anchor Katie Couric criticized the new leadership at her old network for censoring a “60 Minutes” segment on the CECOT prison in El Salvador. Couric, who was once a part-time correspondent for the show, expressed her dismay on her Instagram page, calling the censorship appalling but not surprising.

Couric had warned about compromising independent journalism when Paramount-Skydance acquired Bari Weiss’ Free Press newsletter and appointed her as CBS News’ chief. She criticized CBS and its leadership for settling a lawsuit with President Donald Trump before the merger with Skydance, which she described as Trump extorting the network for business transactions.

Weiss defended her decision to pull the segment, claiming that “60 Minutes” needed to do more on the story. Despite pushback from the show’s staff, executive producer Tanya Simon ultimately complied with Weiss’ decision. Correspondent Sharyn Alfonsi, who reported the segment, emphasized that the story had undergone rigorous internal checks and was factually correct.

The controversy surrounding the censorship of the “60 Minutes” segment has sparked criticism and concern about the state of journalism under the new leadership at CBS. The incident serves as a reminder of the importance of upholding journalistic integrity and independence in the face of external pressures.
