Kentucky woman, 35, allegedly used abortion pills then buried fetus in Christmas-wrapped box in backyard
A Kentucky woman, Melinda Spencer, found herself in legal trouble after allegedly using abortion pills to end her pregnancy and burying the fetus in her backyard. The disturbing incident unfolded after Spencer, 35, admitted to healthcare clinic staff that she had purchased medication online to terminate her pregnancy, a practice that is illegal in the state of Kentucky.
According to Kentucky State Police, Spencer confessed to taking the pills on December 26th and burying the developed male fetus two days later in a shallow grave at her home on Flat Mary Road. Authorities discovered the remains wrapped in a white rag and placed inside a Christmas-wrapped lightbulb box, hidden inside a plastic bag.
It was revealed that Spencer had conceived the child with a man who was not her boyfriend, prompting her to take matters into her own hands. She ordered the abortion pills in an attempt to keep the pregnancy a secret from the man. Spencer’s actions were driven by her desire to abort the fetus independently, without involving medical professionals.
The exact gestational age of the fetus at the time of termination remains unknown, prompting authorities to schedule an autopsy to determine the level of development. In Kentucky, strict laws govern abortion, with almost all procedures deemed illegal except in cases where the mother’s life is at risk.
Spencer was charged with first-degree fetal homicide, abuse of a corpse, tampering with physical evidence, and first-degree promoting contraband. The fetal homicide charge carries severe penalties, including the possibility of the death penalty or life imprisonment upon conviction.
Currently incarcerated at Three Forks Regional Jail in Beattyville, Spencer awaits further legal proceedings as the tragic incident continues to shock the local community. The case serves as a stark reminder of the complexities and legal implications surrounding abortion and the importance of seeking proper medical care in such delicate situations.
