Kia recalling quarter-million cars with fuel tanks that could melt, feds say

Kia Recalls Quarter-Million K5 Sedans Due to Fuel Tank Defect

Kia Motors Corporation is issuing a recall for approximately 250,000 K5 sedans due to a potential defect in their fuel tanks that could pose a safety hazard, according to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA).

The affected vehicles, which span model years 2021 to 2024, may have a damaged valve that allows air to enter the fuel tanks. This can result in the tanks expanding and coming into contact with hot exhaust components, ultimately causing them to melt, the agency explains.

“A melted fuel tank has the potential to leak, increasing the risk of a fire,” the NHTSA warns.

To address this issue, Kia dealers will be replacing the faulty valves in the affected K5 sedans. Additionally, the fuel tanks will undergo inspection for any existing damage and will be replaced as necessary. These repairs will be conducted at no cost to the vehicle owners.

If drivers notice a popping sound coming from the fuel tank area, the illumination of the check engine light on the dashboard, or experience the vehicle running rough, these could be indicators that the fuel tank requires attention, according to the agency.
