Kirk Ferentz moves into tie as Big Ten’s all-time winningest coach

Iowa City, Iowa – The Iowa Hawkeyes secured a dominant 34-7 victory over Albany on Saturday night, with Xavier Williams leading the charge with 122 rushing yards and a touchdown. Not only did the team celebrate a convincing win, but head coach Kirk Ferentz also made history by tying Woody Hayes as the Big Ten’s all-time winningest coach with 205 victories.

In his 27th season at the helm of the Hawkeyes, Ferentz downplayed his milestone achievement in the post-game locker room celebration, focusing instead on the team’s performance. Quarterback Mark Gronowski highlighted Ferentz’s humility, stating that the coach shrugged off any attention on his record-breaking win.

Despite Gronowski’s struggles in his Iowa debut, throwing for just 44 yards before exiting the game due to cramping, the team’s running game stepped up with Williams at the forefront. Taking over for the injured Kamari Moulton, Williams impressed with explosive runs and a standout performance, becoming the first Iowa freshman to rush for over 100 yards in his debut since 2005.

Ferentz commended Williams for his veteran-like performance and the team’s overall dominance on the ground, outgaining Albany 310-43 in rushing yards. The Hawkeyes’ offensive line played a crucial role in the success, paving the way for Williams and Gronowski to find the end zone multiple times.

Albany briefly took the lead in the second quarter, but Iowa quickly responded with a series of scoring drives, solidifying their control of the game. Gronowski showcased his versatility with both passing and rushing touchdowns, while the defense limited Albany’s offensive opportunities.

Ferentz’s legacy as a coaching stalwart was further solidified with his 205th win at Iowa, marking his 23rd season opener victory with the program. Looking ahead, the team will face a tough test against No. 22 Iowa State next Saturday, aiming to build on their strong start to the season.

In conclusion, Iowa’s decisive win over Albany not only showcased their offensive prowess and defensive resilience but also highlighted the team’s depth and potential for a successful season under Ferentz’s guidance. With key players like Williams and Gronowski leading the charge, the Hawkeyes are poised for a competitive campaign in the Big Ten conference.
