Kit Harington was ‘Angered’ By Push to Remake Game of Thrones Season 8
Kit Harington, known for his role as Jon Snow in the hit HBO series “Game of Thrones,” recently expressed his dismay towards the viral petition in 2019 that called for the remake of Season 8 with “competent writers.” The petition, which garnered over 1.8 million signatures, deeply offended Harington, who defended the efforts of series writers David Benioff and D.B. Weiss.
In an interview with the New York Times, Harington shared his frustration, stating, “That genuinely angered me. Like, how dare you? Sorry, that’s just how I feel. I think it was a level of idiocy that can only come about through social media.” The actor was taken aback by the negativity surrounding the final season, especially after the immense effort put in by him and the production team. Harington even revealed that one battle scene alone took 55 consecutive filming days to complete.
Despite the backlash, HBO’s CEO Casey Bloys mentioned that the network never seriously considered reshooting the final season in response to the petition. Bloys acknowledged the passion and enthusiasm of the fans but emphasized that the decision to end the show was not influenced by outside opinions.
“Game of Thrones” Season 8 faced criticism on various fronts, including the portrayal of female characters, lighting, and cinematography. One of the most talked-about moments was when a Starbucks cup was accidentally left in a scene, sparking a wave of viral memes and discussions online.
Overall, the legacy of “Game of Thrones” remains a complex mix of adoration and criticism, showcasing the challenges of concluding a beloved series in the era of social media scrutiny. While the petition may have stirred controversy, it also highlighted the deep connection fans had with the show and their desire for a satisfying conclusion.
