Korean Star of ‘Extreme Job’ Was 55

South Korean actor Song Young-kyu, who gained international recognition for his role as Chief Choi in the popular 2019 film “Extreme Job,” tragically passed away at the age of 55. The actor was found unresponsive in a parked car in Cheoin-gu, Yongin, south of Seoul, with authorities confirming that there were no signs of foul play or a suicide note.

Song began his acting career in 1994 with a stage debut in the children’s musical “Wizard Mureul” and went on to have a successful three-decade-long career across theater, film, and television. He was known for his supporting roles in various projects such as “Trick,” “Stove League,” “Baseball Girl,” and “Hyena,” but it was his role in “Extreme Job” that solidified his reputation as a talented character actor with a unique blend of dry humor and gritty realism.

Earlier this year, Song was involved in a DUI incident in Yongin, which led to his removal from the stage production of “Shakespeare in Love” and reduced roles in two television dramas. Despite this setback, Song’s presence and performance continued to resonate with audiences, grounding productions with his quiet authority and gravitas.

The sudden and unexpected death of Song Young-kyu has once again brought attention to the issue of mental health and media scrutiny in the South Korean entertainment industry. This tragic loss follows the passing of actor Kim Sae-ron earlier this year, highlighting the pressures and challenges faced by those in the spotlight.

Song is survived by his wife and two daughters, leaving behind a legacy of memorable performances and contributions to the Korean entertainment industry. His untimely death serves as a reminder of the importance of mental health awareness and support within the industry.
