Kyle Whittingham Replaces The Fired And Disgraced Sherrone Moore As Michigan’s Football Coach
Michigan Wolverines Announce Hiring of Kyle Whittingham as New Head Football Coach
The University of Michigan made headlines on Friday night with the announcement of Kyle Whittingham as their new football coach. Whittingham, the former Utah coach, has signed a five-year contract to take over the reins from the recently fired Sherrone Moore.
Athletic director Warde Manuel expressed his enthusiasm for the new hire, stating, “Kyle Whittingham is a well-respected and highly successful head coach known for his exceptional character and principled leadership. He embodies the qualities we value at Michigan: vision, resilience, and the ability to build championship-caliber teams.”
Whittingham, who recently announced his departure from Utah after 21 seasons, has an impressive track record with 177 wins under his belt. The 66-year-old coach made it clear that his move to Michigan is not a retirement but rather a new chapter in his coaching career.
In a statement, Whittingham expressed his excitement about joining a program synonymous with tradition and excellence, pledging to uphold those values while striving for greatness together with the Michigan team.
Meanwhile, Utah has granted Whittingham’s request to join Michigan immediately, allowing him to make a swift transition. Defensive coordinator Morgan Scalley has been promoted to replace Whittingham at Utah, where the 15th-ranked Utes are gearing up to face Nebraska in the Las Vegas Bowl on December 31st.
The hiring of Whittingham comes in the wake of Moore’s dismissal due to an inappropriate relationship with a staffer, followed by criminal charges against him. Michigan’s swift action in hiring a new coach aims to maintain stability within the program and retain key players like quarterback Bryce Underwood.
Whittingham’s tenure at Utah has been marked by success, including navigating conference changes and leading the team to multiple championships. His accolades include three national coach of the year awards, and he has a deep connection to the state of Utah, where he played college football at BYU.
As Whittingham looks ahead to his new role at Michigan, he reflects on his time at Utah with fondness and wishes the program continued success under coach Scalley’s leadership. With a proven track record of excellence, Whittingham is poised to make a significant impact at Michigan and lead the Wolverines to new heights in college football.
